The strategic aim of the Plan is to ensure that the Belluno Dolomites National Park is not considered as merely a collection of constraints, but rather as a concrete opportunity for growth, with advantages clearly taking precedence over limits.
The Park's primary aim is to protect the natural, environmental, cultural and agricultural values of the protected area, while at the same time conserving and valorising its resources through cultural, educational and recreational use.
The Park Plan automatically replaces the provisions and constraints of all other sector plans in force.

There are many different natural environments: from the rocky slopes and the rubble areas to the grasslands and the Alpine pastures, from impetuous streams to calm stretches of water, from fir woods to mixed deciduous trees, from glaciers to peatbogs.

The protected area is shaped like a wedge, with two side branches, and borders, to the north, on the South Tyrol park of Fanes, Senes and Braies. Land use in the Park is fairly uniform, as there are no human settlements and ski-ing facilities.
